Hatherley Safer Streets Engagement

Gloucestershire County Council wants to hear from residents about plans to make some roads in the Hatherley area of Cheltenham better for all road users. These plans aim to improve road safety with measures that will enable more trips to be made on foot and by bike, which will also help tackle climate change.

In recent years there has been significant development locally and the council has secured funding from this to reduce the impact of traffic.

The proposed measures include following:

20mph Speed Limit

It is proposed to reduce the existing 30mph speed limit to 20mph and create conditions that are easier for pedestrian and cyclists. Speed surveys show that speeds are low enough to justify reducing the speed limit. Historical road traffic collisions suggest that reducing the speed limit will help reduce the number and severity of collisions.

Any changes to speed limits would be subject to a formal statutory consultation, allowing public comment before implementation.

Pedestrian Crossings

Side road junctions along Hatherley Road and Hatherley Lane will be narrowed to make walking across them quicker and easier and the crossing facilities will be improved. There will be a new zebra crossing on Hatherley Lane near Asda. There will be new crossings including crossing islands on Hatherley Road near the post office and at the junction of Heron Close.

Cyclists

The 20mph speed limit will create a safer environment for cyclists of all ages and abilities. There will be islands to protect cyclists opposite the hospital turning right into the cycle route on the Redgrove Cottages part of Hatherley Lane. This leads to the A40 cycle lane and B4063 route to Gloucester.

Speed Cushions

It is proposed to install three pairs of speed cushions along Hatherley Lane near Asda and before and after the railway bridge. These will be bus friendly.

Reddings Road Roundabout

It is proposed to improve the roundabout for pedestrians and cyclists by providing a wider central island to help slow down vehicles. This will include some landscaping to make it more attractive.

This is the public pre-engagement stage of the project. We are seeking to understand how people in the Hatherley area view the proposals described above.
