Thank you for expressing an interest in applying to join Gloucestershire Fire & Rescue Service as an On-Call firefighter. Please read the following guidance before you apply to ensure your application is completed correctly and accepted, and that you are aware of the selection process.

Becoming an On-Call firefighter with Gloucestershire Fire & Rescue Service is extremely rewarding both to you and your community; however there are some criteria which we ask for:


  • You must live and/or work within five minutes of your local On-Call Fire Station (although we would be interested to hear from you from further afield if your employment allows you to work frequently from home or have the option of working portably - we are currently running a pilot scheme for Chipping Campden, if you live within 9 minutes please enquire for further information)
  • You must be offering the level of cover your local On-Call fire station requires.
  • You must be aged 18 or over when firefighter training starts.
  • You must be physically fit, and have good upper body strength, hearing and eyesight (see ‘fitness and strength’ tests*).
  • You must have a full UK driving licence
  • You must have good eyesight (unfortunately we may not be able to accept applicants with colour vision deficiency*)
  • You must have good hearing*
  • The ability to swim is essential
  • Have a real interest in the fire service and helping the community of Gloucestershire.
You will also need to consider the following:
  • EU Driving Regulations (for those who drive for a living).
  • EU working time directive.

Recruitment checks Should we proceed with your expression of interest, you will be required to undergo some recruitment checks before you commence your employment with us. This will include two references, medical clearance (fitness test) verification of your employment history for the past three months, verification of any gaps in employment of six month or more, proof of national insurance number, proof of right to work in the UK, original driving licence, As part of the recruitment checks, you will be asked to apply a Disclosure & Barring check and if the DBS check discloses any information, this will be considered by the Gloucestershire County Council DBS panel before your employment is confirmed.
