Stroud Library relocation proposal

Gloucestershire County Council is considering a proposal to move the library from its current location to a more centralised and accessible building within the Five Valley’s shopping centre in Stroud.

The proposal is to develop the library offer in Stroud with a more modern, accessible facility right in the heart of the town centre. Stroud’s current library is formed of two interconnecting buildings compromising of a 1970s building and a historic church. The library is on the first floor with limited lift access from the street level.

The new space within the Five Valleys Shopping Centre would be adjacent to the new GP surgery and situated on the lower ground floor. The new proposed library will be accessed via a newly installed, robust lift and will come with a new street level shop front entrance.

Why do we want to make changes?

  • The current library has inadequate and unreliable lift access and cannot be reliably or easily accessed by people with mobility issues or pushchairs.
  • The staff entrance to the library is not accessible by anyone with a mobility disorder
  • Due to the constraints with the current building we cannot adequately develop the space to meet the needs of a growing population
  • The current building has limited visibility and reduced foot fall due its location at the end of Lansdown
  • A more central location could be more convenient for people to access library services

What are we consulting on?

To enhance the library offer to the community surrounding Stroud Library, we are keen to hear your feedback about the proposed move of building location. The move will have a more versatile, larger, accessible space that will be designed to fit the needs of the users who use the space.

The high street presence within an existing popular shopping centre could bring increased footfall and new ways of working with users and partners, widening the access to the service.
