Proud to Learn Oliver McGowan Training Needs Survey
Survey has concluded.
The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism is named after Oliver McGowan, whose death shone a light on the need for health and social care staff to have better training.
The Health and Care Act 2022 introduced a requirement that regulated service providers must ensure their staff receive learning disability and autism training appropriate to their role.
ICS partners are currently identifying the training needs in our local area to ensure staff will be accessing the appropriate training in due course. This is where we require your input to support us in establishing a robust training model.
The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism comes in two Tiers of training. Staff will undertake Tier 1 or Tier 2, depending on their role.
- Tier 1 – E-learning and then the 1 hour online interactive session co-delivered by a person with a learning disability and an autistic person along with a facilitator or
- Tier 2 – E-learning and then the 1 day face to face training co-delivered a person with a learning disability and an autistic person and trainer
Please note that the E-learning package is the same for each tier and everyone will need to complete this no matter where they work or what tier they need to complete.
It is suggested that all staff who require a general awareness of the support that autistic people or people with a learning disability may need are expected to receive training that covers all Tier 1 capabilities. This includes staff in administrative, managerial and estate roles.
It is suggested that staff with responsibility for providing care, support or healthcare, including social care, and other professionals with a high degree of autonomy, are expected to complete the Tier 2 Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training. This could include, but is not limited to, regulated health professionals, registered managers, team leaders, students and trainees, care assistants, support workers, educators, and staff such as those allied health professionals conducting functional assessments and those that conduct capacity, best interest and mental health act assessments.
