The Department for Transport (DfT) launched its Cycle and Walking Investment Strategy (CWIS) in April 2017, (updated in 2021). The strategy outlines Government’s ambition ‘to make cycling and walking the natural choices for shorter journeys or as part of a longer journey’. Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plans (LCWIPs) set out the strategic approach to identifying long-term cycling and walking improvements and make the case for future investment through funding bids and by informing discussions with developers and have helped Gloucestershire to secure £40m of investment.

Interactive Maps

We are now looking at the Newent area. The maps below show proposed networks for cycling and walking corridors that we would like your feedback on. Most of these are on existing roads but there are proposals to the east of Newent, subject to planning application.

[Note – these are routes that should become good walking and cycling routes to link where people want to go – not necessarily the best links at the moment]

Tell us your views

Are these the best routes to improve for walking and cycling? Are there any key issues on these routes that need fixing?

Published plans are available to download here: www.gloucestershire.gov.uk/lcwip(External link)

We will continue to update and refine the approach to developing infrastructure plans in response to Department for Transport evaluation of the CWIS process and currently anticipate that moving forward, the LCWIP will be informed by urban centres and strategic allocations across the county.

In addition, an overarching plan is being written to look at areas outside urban centres.
